ALEKS placement math guide
ALEKS placement prep compared: free, paid and Lemma
You already have one piece of ALEKS prep: the Prep and Learning module that comes with the placement. Here is what else is worth your time, what is worth paying for, and where Lemma helps. We make Lemma, so we say where it is not the answer.
Disclosure: Lemma is our product. We have no relationship with the other options listed.
Start with what you already have
After the placement assessment, ALEKS builds a Prep and Learning module from your results. Schools such as URI require hours in it before a retake, which tells you it is where the course expects you to spend study time. It is matched to the real topics and the real answer entry, which makes it the best-aligned practice you will find. Use it first.
Side by side
| Option | Best for | Cost | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALEKS Prep and Learning module | Topic-matched learning and the real answer entry | Included with placement at most schools | Self-paced; it checks the answer you enter, not the steps you wrote on paper |
| Free video lessons (Khan Academy and similar) | Seeing a topic explained when you are stuck | Free | You watch; nothing checks the work you do afterwards |
| Tutoring or math center at your college | A person who can see your work, and math anxiety | Often free to enrolled students | Hours and wait times; may not be open before placement |
| Paid books and test-prep courses | A structured review in one place | Paid; varies | Static questions, and few are built for ALEKS's topic map |
| Lemma | Practicing ALEKS topics by typing each step and getting the broken move named | Free, no account; the AI tutor has a daily limit | No official ALEKS content; not a replacement for the Prep and Learning module |
Where Lemma fits
- You are solving problems with the module but keep missing them and cannot see why.
- You want more practice on a topic with new numbers every time.
- You want an honest record: help is marked, and only unaided work counts as independent.
Lemma is independent practice for the same kind of topics and is not made by or affiliated with McGraw Hill. It does not replace your school's required module hours.
How to decide in five minutes
- Open your college's ALEKS page and write down the cut scores, the retake rules and the date your score expires.
- Take the placement assessment or a practice run, and look at which topics ALEKS says you have not mastered.
- Work those topics in the Prep and Learning module first. It is free with the placement at most schools, and some schools require the hours anyway.
- If you keep missing the same type of problem, add a step-checked practice source for that topic, or visit the tutoring center with your written work.
- Pay for a course or a tutor only if you tried the above for a week and your weak list is not shrinking.
Questions to ask your college
- What score places me into my program's required math course, and is there a lower course that also counts?
- How many attempts do I get, how long must I wait, and how many learning-module hours are required between attempts?
- Is the highest score used, or the latest?
- Is there a tutoring or math center I can use before I test, and is it free?

Questions
Do I need to pay for ALEKS prep?
Usually not. The placement includes the Prep and Learning module, and good free videos and college tutoring exist. Pay only if you want a structure you will not build yourself.
Is Lemma made by ALEKS?
No. Lemma is independent practice and is not affiliated with or endorsed by ALEKS or McGraw Hill.
Is Lemma free?
Yes. Practice problems and lessons are free with no account or email. The AI tutor has a daily limit.
