Read tables and charts

TEAS math

Read the exact numbers off the table first, then do arithmetic on what you copied.

What this covers

  • Find the rows or columns the question names and copy their values down.
  • A difference question subtracts the two values; a total question adds them all.
  • An average divides the total by how many entries went into it.
  • A percent-of-total question needs the whole table's sum as the denominator.

Worked example

Worked example

Visitors — Sat: 152, Sun: 118. How many more came on Saturday?

  1. 152−118=34How many more means the gap between the two rows, not their sum.
Another worked example

Groups A–D have 8, 12, 6, and 14 observations. Find B's share and D minus C.

  1. N=8+12+6+14=40Add every group to identify the whole.
  2. 4012⋅100%=30%,14−6=8A share divides a part by the whole; a difference subtracts the requested counts.

A common mistake

A mistake Lemma catches

From

increase=(15−12)→increase=(15−12)⋅1000

“The axis counts thousands, so each unit on it is 1 · 1000 = 1000 visitors. The bars differ by 15 − 12 = 3 units, which is 3 · 1000 = 3000 visitors, not 3.”

Sample problem

A chart shows visitors by day — Saturday: 152, Sunday: 132. How many more visitors came on Saturday than on Sunday? Enter the number.

Sat: 152,Sun: 132
